Support Those With HIV / AIDS
Support Those With HIV / AIDS
With about 80 people in treatment, HIV/AIDS is not rampant in Dominica. However, many have not been tested so it is impossible to know how many undiagnosed infected individuals are living in Dominica. In such a small society, discrimination is a problem and confidentiality is a strain. It is difficult for individuals who have special hidden health needs such as scans, dentistry and medication for opportunistic infections.
Facilitated by Lifeline Ministries, Life Goes On, a HIV/AIDS support network, reaches out to PLHIV from all over the island providing food packages and assistance with rent, medical and utility bills during periods of unemployment, as well as supportive long term counselling. We also provide support to those who are bereaved due to AIDS. Life Goes On also initiated the Dial A Ride bus service sponsored by the Canada Fund for local initiatives. Dial A Ride provides transportation for those with mobility problems and those who need safe door-to-door transfers such as our teens support group members. Lifeline is also looking into how we can share resources with other organizations for people with chronic health problems such as the Lupus Foundation, Sickle Cell Cares and the Dementia Foundation. |
