RECOVERY... after Maria! It has been nearly 2 years now, since Maria’s devastating blow that occurred on September 18, 2017, Dominica, our once beautiful tropical island, remains in the midst of recovery. Our island continues to bloom again...
Many that were vulnerable before remain so... the disabled, the elderly, single mothers with small children, the mentally ill, and those with special needs.
Some homes are still without electricity; hundreds are still in tents and shelters
The homeless on the streets are increasing and the charitable feeding programmes have not resumed
Many private homes and church buildings still lie in ruins
Umbrella NGOs are still struggling to reestablish
Entrepreneurs are trying to restart their small businesses are still servicing pre-Maria loans
Families and communities are physically recovering but are still carrying a sense of shock and loss - PTSD
Internet is largely restored with What’s App the main communication media, but data is expensive and public WiFi unreliable
